From an early age Tozen exhibited exceptional gifts in religious thought within the Greek Orthodox faith under the tutelage of stern Orthodox monks, and was noted for pinning these austere personages down through direct and uncompromising questions about all things in the heavens. In later stages of his spiritual journey, Tozen moved on to Sweden where a great vision enraptured his mind and spirit. Having thoroughly examined all the world's religions in great depth by seeking an answer that could explain this profound vision, none were adequate and left a great void within the quest. Later, Tozen arrived in Japan and had the good merit in meeting and studying the wordless path under a great Zen-sage named Shindo Sawai; this sage, whose temple was on Shikoku Island south of Osaka, was then in his late seventies and a renowned Zen mystic within a more esoteric variant of Rinzai Zen. Returning to Europe, Tozen's spirit experienced a great struggle for some years until finally finding the proper entrance into the genuine buddhadharma and realizing how to evolve in its light by the many years of past trials and errors combined with the way he learned to enter the eternal principle of the buddhadharma (as to see the truth) in Japan. Fluent in several languages, Tozen presently resides in Sweden and established seven years ago the school of Unborn Mind Zen, a virtual sangha of genuine spirituality. Tozen's aim in the formation of this school is to provide a safe haven for some few good dharma seeds to grow amidst the present darkness of this age; according to Tozen, during this age the true buddhadharma will be as rare as a flower atop a great snow-filled mountain and the false paths of Mara are as dangerous as the vast sand dunes of the Sahara desert--beautiful and inviting at first, but full of death traps once one becomes lost without a skillful guide. |
